[Book Review] The First Heretic

Howdy folks, thats right I'm back, I know it's shocking but I do intend to at least try with this blog :D

So here we go, my first book review and what a book to review by the way.

The First Heretic by Aaron Dembski-Bowden

The Basic Plot: We begin the book with the Word Bearers being castigated by the Emperor for their worship of him, which goes against the Emperors vision of a universe without religion or worship. Distraught with the judgement Lorgar and his legion seek another path whilst destroying world after world for the Great Crusade venting all of their fury and rage upon the battlefield. After a long search this path leads them to the very edges of the universe where they meet more powerful forces than they could have ever imagined. After all their efforts of trying to illuminate the Imperium, the corruption of Chaos takes hold of the word bearers and unknown to them is that the very truth they have quested for is in fact the very roots of heresy itself.

The theme and format of the book follows along the lines of all the previous heresy books, in that we move from character to character seeing the book play out from various view points, be it Lorgar [Word Bearers Primarch], Argel-Tal [7th Assault Company Captain] the Adeptus Custodes or remembrancers/non-imperial personnel, as well as temporary view from other primarchs and guest characters.

The characters themselves are excellently portrayed and have a real lasting effect on you, I found myself warming to the characters very quickly and Aaron's portrayal of Lorgar is as near to perfect as you can get, he gives you exactly what you expect of Lorgar and so much more, but this is not to say any other of the characters are in any way lacking.

Finally you can expect some great fast paced action, thought provoking writing and genuine emotion flowing all through this book, as well as loads of appearances from other legions and plenty of primarchs, as well as some startling revelations about Imperial History, the creation of the primarchs and more of the universes darkest secrets.

In short Aaron Dembski-Bowden has performed excellently and given us possibly the best addition to the Horus Heresy series yet, and looking now at my signed copy of the book I got early at Games Day makes me all the happier.

As a finishing note, I asked Aaron when I met him at Games Day what we could expect next from him, especially Horus Heresy wise, his answer in short was: 'I'll definitely be wanting to do more of the heresy series and if I can it'll be involving the World Eaters.' So look forward to that and please, please, please, if you are a fan of the Horus Heresy series then get this book, you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

Humble Beginnings

Hello, yes that's right I've returned with another blog, but before I start, I should probably get you caught up to speed with whats going on, or more to the point what this is all about for you new to me/my blogs.

(Myself and a confused looking Aaron Dembski Bowden)

My name is Ray Watt, I'm a 22 year old war gaming, blogging, vidya playing kinda guy, I used to run a blog called 'Spread the Word' which was based on my Word Bearers army, that however fell apart and I've begun a new project, and will hopefully not make the same mistake or give up mid project.

That's the joy this time, I'm already mid-project, making this blog rapidly different. How you ask, well it's relatively simple, instead of me constantly giving you excuses as to why I haven't painted or just pictures of what I have, I'm going to attempt to vary my blogging, with Book Reviews, Tactica's, Opinion based articles as well as reviews of DVD's/Vidya and anything else that has caught my attentions, as well as army/warhammer based blogs also. As well as the other armies which I play/build which will eventually be blogged here also.

My first blog (after this one) will be my summary of games day as well as some of my preliminary work on my Angels, but for now I'll go on and give you the basis for my project this time.

In roughly 2-3 weeks time, my local Wargaming club will be hosting one of our usual ridiculously large Apocalypse games featuring fully painted armies, so a few months ago I set out on a new project to have a Dark Angels army ready for this game at roughly 4000-5000Pt's and so it begun a fury of painting and prep work, culminating in this..... an army based blog and quite a few headaches, but hey, such is life. So I'll leave it at that for now and I'll have my Games Day blog up by this weekend hopefully, but for now I have to get back to painting a group of Grey Knight Terminators for a friend at my local to help him get his army done on time, generous guy I am I know eh?

(Not Madness, Not Sparta, This is Games Day UK)

So thanks for reading and be prepared for more in the future, but for now I'll love you and leave with a few teasing shots of my Games Day trip and the possible promise of some photo's of the Grey Knights in my recent blogs to come.

Thanks
Rayuzaki
